«I approach my materia on tip-toe so as to avoid brusquely awakening it from its cosmic lethargy, while I tune in on the wavelength of its tacit tendencies. Then I begin a timid dialogue to interpret its tastes, inclinations, and desires, to acquaint myself with its mode of expression, and to speak with it without doing it violence. Lastly, with a technique also made up of respect and love of its nature, I do ‘with it’ what it seems to want me to do with it. This is how `our things’ come into being. Yes, indeed, I said `our’. Because they are only half mine. The other half belongs to the nature of the material with which I have now established a correspondence of feelings of affection»
